Leading Edge Process Consultants LLC is a small process improvement consulting firm based in Vienna, Virginia. As a Partner of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), Leading Edge is authorized to deliver a range of services including the three-day Introduction to CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) class, as well as SCAMPI (Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement) appraisals.

Our CEO and Principal Consultant, Mr. Bill Smith, is a Carnegie Mellon graduate with over 25 years of management and engineering experience. He was recently honored with the Best “Practical Guidance” Presentation award at the November 2008 National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) CMMI Technology Conference and User Group. Bill’s current areas of focus are the CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV) and CMMI for Services (CMMI-SVC).

Leading Edge offers the following services: 

  • Training. Our CEO personally delivers all of our training classes. As an SEI-Authorized CMMI Instructor, Bill has taught the Introduction to CMMI over 30 times to more than 500 students in the past five years. His uniquely info-taining style has earned an overall 4.9 student feedback rating, in addition to customer awards for quality of training delivery.
    • Public Classes. We’ve built a national reputation teaching the Introduction to CMMI (CMMI-DEV) class at our upscale training space in the heart of beautiful Reston Town Center, just minutes from Washington, D.C., and Dulles International Airport. For 2009, we’ve added two more courses to our schedule: the official one-day SEI Services Supplement for CMMI v1.2 course (starting in April) and our own one-day CMMI for Busy People (scheduled for the fourth quarter).
    • Private Classes. Bill has taught the Introduction to CMMI at 20 different locations from Virginia Beach to Long Beach, including privately contracted deliveries at AT&T, BAE Systems, General Dynamics, ITT Industries, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman.
  • Consulting. We offer process improvement consulting on a limited basis, seeking to engage no more than two customers at any given time. This focus allows us to provide a high level of customer service and satisfaction despite our sometimes heavy public and private training schedule.

Our consulting methodology focuses on the use of the CMMI for improved business performance -- not just compliance. We’ll help to:

    • Jump-start your process improvement program. Determine where to begin, create a reasonable plan, establish your team, and make sure everybody is up-to-speed on the CMMI.
    • Create process descriptions that will actually be used. No, we don’t write your process descriptions for you… and you should run away from any consulting firm that offers to do just that! But we will facilitate brainstorming sessions, review process documentation, provide CMMI interpretations, and provide your team with needed guidance.
    • Develop post-appraisal action plans. After each of your appraisals – and yes, you’ll typically have more than one in an appraisal life cycle – we’ll guide you in the development of a realistic plan to implement your “improvement opportunities.”
  • Appraisals. Leading Edge is authorized to conduct a full range of SCAMPI appraisals – all the way up to and including a Class A SCAMPI for Maturity Level rating.
